Mac OS Panther X - update 2010 - ENG

Mac OS Panther X - Update 2010 - ENG

DESCRIZIONE

Panther is the next major step in the evolution of Mac OS X. This revision brings forth some great new features.
Installation:
Mac OS X installations just keep growing in size. Panther comes on three disks, all of which are needed for typical installations (a fourth disk forXcode is included). Run the installer from the first disk, and follow the on screen instructions. When the first disk completes (may take a while on slow systems), it will restart the computer, at which time it will ask for the other two disks. The whole process took 25 minutes on the G5 and 3 hours on the 500 MHz iBook.
Usage:
Panther brings many new features to Mac OS X. From a new look, to increased security, to great new applications, this update provides a variety of cool new features. In this review, I will detail some of the more prominent ones.
First off, the Finder has been changed for the better in Panther. Windows now have the brushed metal look, but that is just the start. The toolbar at the top of the Finder windows have been reduced to a couple buttons and a search field. All of the quick access icons have been moved to a sidebar at the left of the windows. This setup is much more effective than the old one, as everything is neatly organized and easy to use. This side bar has even been added to open and save dialog boxes, bringing consistency throughout the OS.
Another graphical change in Panther is a reduction of pin striping. Pin striping has been completely removed from the title bars of windows, and has been severely lightened everywhere else. This helped to clean up the entire operating system, and made it look more professional. After using Panther, you will never want to go back to the "ugly" days of Jaguar.
Of course, a major update to an operating system includes more than good looks, various new features and applications have been added or updated. For instance, one highly requested holdover from Mac OS 9 has finally been implemented: labels. Once again, we can assign labels to items in the Finder. This feature was sorely missed and is a welcomed addition.
Labels are nice, but they don't even hold a candle to the new window managing technology called Expose. With Expose a single keystroke can clear all windows to reveal the desktop, show all windows for a particular application, or show all open windows allowing you to choose which one you want in the front. You really have to experience this to know how wonderful it is, but let me tell you, it has revolutionized the way I deal with multiple windows.
Now that dealing with multiple windows has become easier, what about dealing with multiple users. Well, Apple has decided to take care of this in Panther too. They have added a feature called Fast User Switching which makes it a breeze to switch users. No longer do you have to log out and stop all your running processes to switch users. With Fast User Switching, all processes keep running in the background. This means if you are working on something, need to switch users, and then switch back, everything will be exactly the way you left it, letting you get back to what you were doing in an instant.
With a multiuser operating system, security is always a concern. Just how secure are those personal files stored in your home directory? Apple thought about this too, and came up with FileVault. FileVault uses encryption techniques to scramble the files in your home directory, making them impossible to decipher by others. When you need to use these files, they are decrypted on the fly, without you ever knowing. This is a great feature for anyone who values security of personal data.
Some other features now built into Mac OS X are things like faxing, archiving, and secure deletion of files. All print dialogs now have a button that allows you to fax your document to to someone. Panther even has the ability to receive faxes, possibly making the fax machine obsolete for some people. Archiving of files is Apple's term for zipping. When you zip a file, you compress it so that it uses less hard drive space. Apple has built this feature into the OS, so now you can zip and unzip files without a third party application. As for the secure delete feature, this is another thing built for those users who value security. When you normally trash a file, you are really just erasing the link to it, the data still remains. With secure delete, all the data for the file(s) is written over, so nobody can recover your trashed files.
The last operating system specific feature I will talk about is an improved iDisk. Apple has realized that accessing and transferring files to and from an iDisk can be a slow process. That's why they created the ability to cache your iDisk data. All iDisk data is now stored on your computer, as well as the iDisk, so accessing it seems much faster. Also, they have added the ability to synchronize iDisk files across multiple Macs, and even work off-line with those files, and sync up the next time you connect to your iDisk. Some handy features for .Mac users.
Now that all of the major OS updates are out of the way, let's focus on some of the major application additions and upgrades. First, let's look at Preview. Preview is the Mac OS X application for viewing images and PDF documents. While it has always been good at viewing images, PDFs were not so great. With Panther, that has all changed. Preview now displays PDFs at lightning speed, even on slower Macs. Plus, you can now select text for copying, view the table of contents, and thumbnails load much quicker. Yet another positive is the ability to view PostScript documents. In the past, you would have to download a third party application to view these files. Now, with Panther, PS files are converted to PDF files for easy viewing within Preview.
Another application that received some nice new features is iChat. Now called iChat AV, this program not only allows you to have text conversations, but also allows for audio and video conversations. You can now see and hear the person you are talking too, a very nice touch. iChat AV also has rudimentary support for buddy groups, which could become a great feature in the future.
Image Capture has also received a nice new update. The only new, but big, feature of Image Capture is the ability to share digital cameras and scanners. Once set up, users on your network can remotely access a scanner, or view the pictures stored within a digital camera. With some cameras, there is even the ability to remotely take pictures, which could be very cool.
Finally, we get to the biggest new application in Panther, FontBook. FontBook is an application designed to help you manage your fonts. With it, you can group together fonts, disable ones you don't like, and easily install new fonts. This is a great way to manage moderately sized font collections, but isn't a replacement for commercial font management utilities (at least not yet).
Problems:
I have not encountered any problems with Panther, but other users have. Apple has issued a series of updates to fix problems with Firewire 800 drives, FileVault, and more.
Conclusion:
This is a great upgrade. A ton of features, a new look to the whole experience, cool new and upgraded applications, and more make this a must have upgrade.
